Thursday, September 8, 2022 - We depart Boise, Idaho on our way to Elko, Nevada, the "Gateway to the Rubies!" The drive took us about six hours to complete and we did have one 20-minute delay on route for construction on Highway 51. Lisa and I have wanted to go back to Elko to visit the Ruby Mountains again. We had stopped at the Rubies during on our earlier trips through this area and we wanted to see them again.

Note: Along this stretch of road on Highway 51, Lisa and I talked at length about the fact that we are putting on weight since we have been driving more and exercising less. We have also been eating out with friends which tends to add the pounds. Lisa has read a book called, "Thin for Good," which tells us what to eat and how to keep the weight off for the long term. We are going to give it a try. Right now, I am eating less carbs, sugars, and caffeine. As I lose the weight, I tend to be more tired and that is what has been happening over the last few days.

Friday, September 9, 2020 - We decide to take a hike in the Ruby Mountains. We drove to near Lamoille, NV and turned onto the road up the canyon to the glacially created Ruby Canyon. We drove all the way to the top of the canyon to the trailhead for the Island Lake trail. We hiked this trail which is two miles one way and climbs 1000 feet. The hike is uphill all the way and the views are very scenic. We are late in the year for the trail and the terrain is pretty dry,, but still nice. The lake was very pretty and we rested there for about 45 minutes before heading down the hill. Downhill all the way back and pretty easy. We then drove to a lower picnic area for lunch. After lunch, it was back to Elko to fill up the truck's diesel tanks. The price was $4.99 per gallon. After a little shopping, it was back to the RV for rest and relaxation.

Saturday, September 10, 2022 - I made this great decision that we should take a bike ride up the road in Ruby Canyon. After breakfast, we drove to the beginning of the road up the hill. It is a continuous uphill climb and then downhill all the way back. I have been dieting and not eating much food, so I felt pretty weak at the beginning of the climb. On top of that, the climb starts with a fairly lengthy ten percent climb. So, I worked my legs pretty well; we had not been on the bikes for a challenging ride in some time. We continued up the hill and after about 1,600 feet of climbing, I had had enough for the day. We had about another thousand feet of climbing to do, but we turned around and coasted back down the hill. I was tired and ready to do an "about-face." We had a picnic lunch before returning to Elko.

Elko, Nevada is really growing. There is lots of shopping there and new residential. We went to a shoe store where I bought a new pair of tennis shoes.

Sunday, September 11, 2022 - After a light breakfast, we went for a three-mile walk. Then we hooked up the RV for the drive to the Cabela's Sporting Goods parking lot in Reno. It was a nice day with some smoke in the air in the distance.
