Friday, September 20, 2024 - Today, we drove from Nephi, Utah to the Riverside RV Park in Hatch, Utah and just ten miles from Bryce Canyon National Park. The drive took about four hours and the weather was excellent. We arrived around two o'clock and were able to set up the RV without problems. We have been to this park before, and the owners are very nice. Cold at night (at an altitude of about 7.000 feet, so we had to be careful about our water hose freezing over night.
After setting up the RV, we decided to take the bikes and ride the Red Canyon Trail from Red Canyon into Bryce Canyon National Park. From the Red Canyon Trailhead, we would ride about fourteen miles to the entry point for Bryce Canyon NP. There is a trail that takes you all the way to the park entry and then on into the park to the Sunset Vista Trailhead. The total distance is about 17.5 miles one way and it is uphill nearly all the way to the trailhead in the park. The weather was very nice for nearly the entire ride to the park, but there were thunderstorms building to the west, which was where we had to ride back to our truck. We took some photos from the vista and then began the ride back to Red Canyon. It was virtually downhill all the way back to the start of the ride, but the storms resulted in the wind changing direction. Also, at about the halfway point, it began to rain on us; but not super-hard. Also, there were several places on the trail where there were large gaps in the asphalt that caused the bikes to hit these gaps pretty hard. With about a third of the distance back to the truck left, Lisa's bike hit a gap and the battery became dislodged and the power to her bike stopped. We reset it, but it again turned off the battery and would not allow us to turn it back on. Now, Lisa was using the lowest gear on the climbs and coasting the rest of the way on the downhills. There were several places where Lisa was working very hard to pedal the EBike with no power up the hills. It began to rain harder and it was cold. We kept working to get to the five-mile-left point because it was virtually downhill all the way back to the truck from there. We coasted the last five miles in the cold rain and were chilled by the time we arrived at the truck. It was an adventure, but we made it. We ended up with 35 miles and over 2,800 feet of climb. We were cold-soaked when done.
Saturday, September 21, 2024 - Today, we decided to drive to Bryce Canyon National Park and check out the views. We drove to the park and then drove the 18 miles all the way to the end of the road in the park to Rainbow Point. From there, we made ur way back to the main part of the park stopping at the numerous pull-outs along the way. When we got back to the main park, we found that the road to Bryce Point and Inspiration Point was blocked due to a full parking lot. We decided to go back to the Ruby General Store to get some coffee and donuts. While eating donuts, we decided to take the park shuttle to Bryce Point and then hike the 1.5 miles to Inspiration Point where we would then catch the shuttle back to our truck. We got to Bryce Point and the views were outstanding. We took a ton of photos and then began the hike to Inspiration Point. We stopped along the way several times to take photos. We then arrived at Inspiration Point which, in our opinions, has the best views of the park. We took many more photos. We also met a very nice couple and daughter who were visiting form the United Kingdom. We had a great visit with them. We then rode the shuttle back to the truck. We had, Shauna, the driver on both shuttle trips to Bryce Point and back. She is super-positive in nature and fun to talk to. We then returned to the RV. It was a great day and we took a ton of great photos.
Sunday, September 22, 2024 - We worked on the rig some in the morning and I place the spare tire on the RV; we have one tire that is wearing much faster than the others. We will use the worn tire as a spare until we get another tire.
We then decided to take a drive on Scenic Highway 12 to Escalante. It was a beautiful day, and the drive was awesome. We stopped and drove through each of the little towns along the way. Since it was Sunday, most stores were closed. We did stop at the Visitor Center in Escalante to talk to the ranger. We also had lunch in Escalante before heading back to the RV. Lisa was not feeling well, so we drove straight back to the RV.
