Tuesday, September 15, 2020 - We drove for four hours to get here, but we got lost for about 30 minutes near Breezewood, Pennsylvania. That happens once in a while. We started late since we did not have to check in until 2:00 in the afternoon. The drive was uneventful and most of the trip was on I-70, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We will be sent a bill for distance driven on "The Pike." It can get pretty pricey because they taken the number of axles that your vehicle has and, for us, that number is five (three on the RV). The price is worth it since the road is in good condition and we can move along at a good pace without interruptions. The Country Acres Campground is very nice and the WiFi appears to be very good. This is a pricey campground ($58 per night) so it should be pretty nice. We are in a pretty busy commercial area, but just on the edge of the rural Amish countryside. There is a Costco about seven miles away and we will be heading there shortly for some supplies. So far, all is going well. We will be here for six days and tomorrow we will be heading for Gettysburg, scene of the massive battle during the Civil War.
Wednesday, September 16, 2020 - We decided to drive around the Lancaster area to see what the area is all about. We drove to the town of Bird-in-Hand and then on to Intercourse, Pennsylvania. We drove through the town of Intercourse and felt that it was a community highly commercialized upon its name. There were lots of shops selling "touristy" items that we do not need and shops selling food. There are also large commercial properties that are focused on the Amish community and they will give you tours of what they depict as a typical Amish home. You can also pay for a ride in a horse-drawn Amish buggy. The roads are busy and we both felt that this could be unsafe as well as not much fun. We both agreed that we felt that Shipshewana, Indiana was more of a small-town Amish/Mennonite community. We were glad that we had been able to spend some time there. We opted to pass on these commercial establishments and just drive around the country. The open country is very beautiful and a pleasure to drive through. We had hoped to ride bike on some of these country roads, but the roads are narrow and we decided in might not be as safe as we like. We have decided to cut our stay in the Lancaster area in half to just three days. We will be going to Gettysburg tomorrow and then leave for Vermont on Friday. It is just too busy and commercial for us in this area.
