We left Fort Sam Houston and managed to get off the base without incident. We then drove on I-35 south through San Antonio to I-90 west that would take us to Sanderson, Texas and west Texas. We finally left San Antonio in the rear view mirror (after passing right by Lackland AFB (where I entered the service in 1972 to become an officer) and entered the open country of west Texas. Lots of cotton fields and small towns along I-90. The drive was pleasant and the roads were excellent for the entire trip. We did stop in Marathon to see the Gates Hotel and the Gates Hotel Gardens. This is a very nice "oasis" in the middle of the desert and there were lots of flowers and green grass. Check it out in the photo gallery.

When we arrived at Paisanos RV Park, we found it easy to get into and set up was very smooth. After setting up the RV, we decided to take a drive and see the Terlingua area and part of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
